Since 1991, the YBA has actively promoted a high set of professional standards for yacht and boat brokers. We are proud to claim that our members abide by the highest brokering standards in North America and have made the task of buying or selling a boat in BC a straightforward, positive experience for the recreational boater.
Brokers who are YBA members gain access to a number of benefits that clearly put them at an advantage in the yacht brokering industry - both in dealing with the public and with other brokers.
Corporate Membership Individual Broker Membership
BCYBA Code of Ethics and Bylaws (by signing and submitting an application, prospective members are agreeing to abide by these - please ensure you have read them prior to submitting your application).
Common Documents Our common documents - including Purchase Agreements for both new and used vessels, a Yacht Purchase and Sale Agreement, a Marketing Agreement, a Bill of Sale and a Co-operating Broker Agreement - have been vetted by lawyers experienced in the marine industry and give both brokers and the public the confidence that all aspects of the sale have been documented.
Certification The BC Yacht Brokers Association Certification Program was developed to further raise the professional standards of brokers in British Columbia.
The program consists of three phases: 1) Salesman Level One - consists of basic knowledge to conduct a sale legally and ethically. 2) Salesman Level Two - will illustrate your understanding of the product being sold as well as your ability to understand a survey. 3) Broker Status - demonstrates your competency on the water as well as in all areas of brokerage. The program is a self-study course that was developed with input from lawyers, accountants, experienced brokers and experts in the marine industry. Not only does the Certification Exam test brokers on their overall knowledge of brokering, but also ensures that their knowledge of the boating industry is at a level that will assist boat buyers or sellers in making the right decisions.
Accredited brokers can be identified by the use of "CYB" following their name.
Floating Boat Shows Members receive a substantial discount on space in BCYBA-sponsored floating shows. (Please visit www.floatingboatshows.com for information on the next show.)
Ethics By joining the BCYBA, every member has agreed to follow an established Code of Ethics detailing conduct of relations with the public and with fellow yacht brokers. In cases where disputes do arise, the BCYBA Ethics Committee, made up of experienced brokers, will monitor the situation and offer arbitration services to resolve the problem.
Free Page on YBA Website The BCYBA has its own Internet site to promote members and the benefits of dealing with professional certified yacht brokers. Each corporate member of the Association is entitled to one free page on the site.
Advertising Campaigns As part of the BCYBA, you'll receive the additional benefit of being listed as one of our member companies in our advertising. The public has come to recognize the value of dealing with a BCYBA member and will more than likely choose a broker associated with the BCYBA over one that is not.
Regulations Updates In conjunction with the BC Marine Trades Association, the BCYBA monitors many issues which affect the recreational marine industry. GST regulations, holding tank regulations, debris control and operator proficiency are just a few of the issues we monitor for our members. When a change occurs that affects your business, we notify you right away.
BCMTA Membership Corporate membership in the BCYBA includes membership in the BC Marine Trades Association. Benefits of this Association include exhibitor discounts for the Vancouver International Boat Show, Visa/Mastercard merchant deposit discounts, discounts on all BCMTA sponsored events such as the Annual Industry Conference, regular updates on government regulations and industry news
